3.3 Collaborations and health services

As a dental school, focusing on health and well-being is our utmost priority. We completely understand how oral health is strongly associated with one's quality of life. In 2022, Dentistry UI had held numerous and widespread social activities including screenings and treatments for oral and dental health, as well as health promotion across Indonesia. Shared on-campus sport facilities and psychological counseling services are also provided and accessible to faculty members, educational staff, and students for free. Dentistry UI encourages its internal members to habituate a healthy lifestyle physically and mentally in order to create a vibrant and sustainable educational and work environment.

3.3.1 Current collaborations with health institutions

Local Collaboration

The covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the oral health of many people around the world. Some of the most urgent issues include delayed or cancelled dental appointments, increased consumption of sugary foods and drinks, reduced access to preventive and restorative care, and increased risk of oral infections and diseases. To address these challenges, it is essential to identify and prioritize the oral health needs of different populations and contexts, and to develop evidence-based strategies and interventions that can improve oral health outcomes and reduce oral health inequalities.
One way to achieve this is to establish and strengthen local networks of oral health researchers, practitioners, policymakers and community stakeholders. These networks can facilitate the exchange of knowledge, experiences, best practices and resources, as well as foster collaboration and coordination among different sectors and disciplines. By working together, these networks can enhance the capacity and sustainability of oral health systems and services, and promote oral health as an integral part of overall health and well-being.
The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia gave the best effort to address the challenges of COVID-19 pandemic to the dental treatment. Working together with one of the local networking hospitals, i.e. Persahabatan General Hospital, the Faculty of Dentistry explored the effect of Povidone Iodine and Hydrogen Peroxide to the CT value of SARS-COV-2 in asymptomatic and mild symptomatic patients. The results showed that the prosedur to rinse the oral cavity for 30 seconds and in the posterior part of the throat for 30 seconds three times a day for 5 days in a row using povidone iodine 1%, povidone iodine 0.5%, hydrogen peroxide 3% or hydrogen peroxide 1.5% increased the CT value of SARS-COV-2. Persahabatan General Hospital used these findings as a procedure for their patients.

Disadvantaged People

We are excited to announce that the Faculty of Dentistry of Universitas Indonesia has launched a health outreach program in collaboration with Mandiri Amal Insani Foundation, a non-profit foundation that manages Zakat. The aim of this program is to increase the awareness of oral health in the communities and to provide free dental education and prevention of dental diseases of the disadvantaged people.
Oral health is an important aspect of overall health and well-being, but many people in Indonesia lack access to affordable and quality dental care. According to the World Health Organization, more than 90% of Indonesian people suffer from dental caries, and more than 60% have periodontal diseases. These conditions can lead to pain, infection, tooth loss, and even systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Therefore, a collaboration with a non-profit foundation that has been working to improve the quality of people’s life, allows us to reach more communities in rural and urban areas across the country.
We hope that this program will make a positive impact on the lives of many people and help them achieve better oral health and quality of life. We also hope that it will inspire more dentists and dental students to join us in our mission to promote oral health in Indonesia.
