Partnerships for the Goals

Year 2022

17.2 Relationships to support the goals

Relationships with regional NGOs and government for SDG policy

The Minister of Health, Republic of Indonesia, performed a public speech in the ceremony of the 62nd anniversary, the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia (FKG UI). He mentioned that Indonesia was facing a shortage of dentists, a major concern for the country’s oral health. There are only 40,000 dentists in Indonesia, which is inadequate for the country’s population of over 270 million. He asked for the contribution of FKG UI to address this issue by increasing the number of dental graduates and providing them with the necessary skills and knowledge to serve the community. He was also welcoming the graduates of FKG UI to work in health centres across the country and serve the communities. Hopefully, FKG UI can generate professional dental graduates who are actively participating in the development of Indonesia’s health system, are adaptable to the development of science and technologies, and are able to collaborate multiprofessionally.

Collaboration with NGOs for SDGs

We are excited to announce that the Faculty of Dentistry of Universitas Indonesia (FKG UI) has launched a health outreach program in collaboration with Mandiri Amal Insani Foundation (MAI), a non-profit foundation that manages Zakat for disadvantaged communities. The aim of this program is to increase the awareness of oral health in the communities, to provide free dental education and prevention of dental diseases of the disadvantaged people. The first project involving MAI was carried out to serve the communities in Desa Cisarua, Kecamatan Tegalwaru, Kabupaten Purwakarta in collaboration with Dental Hospital FKG UI, Indonesia Dental Association in Purwakarta, Kampung Ilmu Foundation, and Dental Institute of Indonesian Navy (Ladokgi TNI AL). Students and academic staff of FKG UI were volunteering in this event. A collaboration with non-profit foundations that have been working to improve the quality of people’s life, allows us to reach more communities in rural and urban areas across the country.

Oral health is an important aspect of overall health and well-being, but many people in Indonesia lack access to affordable and quality dental care. According to the World Health Organization, more than 90% of Indonesian people suffer from dental caries, and more than 60% have periodontal diseases. These conditions can lead to pain, infection, tooth loss, and even systemic diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, on 26-28 September 2022, FKG UI enhanced the collaboration with PT Unilever Tbk. to serve communities by performing dental education for school-age children through school health programs, teledentistry for virtual personal consultation, and free basic dental treatments. The collaboration between FKG UI and PT Unilever Tbk was expected to make a positive impact on the lives of many people and help them achieve better oral health and quality of life.

In 2021, The faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia, held a virtual international conference as an International Dental Collaboration of the Mekong River (IDCMR) activity. The 15th event of IDCMR presented Dental Research in COVID-19 Pandemic: Challenges and Opportunities for Improving Oral Health Management. Several countries participated in the event, including Indonesia, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia, China, India, Myanmar, Taiwan and Vietnam. One of the IDCMR goals was to improve oral health in countries of IDCMR members through scholarships provided for dental students and faculties professional training, conferences, and policy briefs.

The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Indonesia, continously contributes in the dental education development at the national, regional, and international levels.
